Description:
The year 2008 saw the dawn of Dr. Shankar Tenginkai Vidyaniketana Pre-primary School with the inception of 02 classrooms and 02 toilets. This initiation through Konkana Kurahatti Abhivruddhi (education & social justice) Trust witnessed the beginning of a new era in the area of quality education in and around Konkana Kurahatti.
However financial constraints to the organization resulted in slowing down of construction of school infrastructure activities. Under these circumstances the management took a difficult decision to continue with construction of 02 classrooms every alternate year; thus providing ample time for the management to raise funds appropriately. At present the school has 07 classrooms; the management intends to resume the construction activities from Oct 2018 to further enhance the school infrastructure in a new 2 acre plot of Land. The class rooms measuring 18 feet in Width and 21 feet in length can accommodate a maximum number of 35 children. The classrooms are designed to allow maximum sunlight and air during the day thereby reducing the use of electricity to the bare minimum.
Generous voluntary contributions and donations from family and friends since 2006 is the only source of income for the organization.
Conception:
In 2004, The Founding Trustee started distributing note books to government school children at Konkana Kurahatti village; this was a small initiative to help school children meet their educational needs as the village was hit by a drought.A couple of years later he thought of starting a Charitable Trust in order to sustain the book distribution program in the years to come. Thus “Konkana Kurahatti Abhivruddhi(education & social justice) Trust” was conceptualized and founded on 19th September 2006 with the support and cooperation of two likeminded people Mr. Y H Hosamani (Teacher, Primary school) and Mr. Raghunag Rattehalli (former Human rights officer, United Nations Organization) who became the trustees along with Mr.Santosh Shobha Sangannavar.
Objective:
The Objective and primary goal of Konkana Kurahatti Abhivruddhi Trust is “Promote quality Education and Eradicate Social Injustice”.Several projects were implemented and some are in different stages of implementation to realize the objective of the trust.
Key program achievements of KKAT:
(1) Free distribution of approximately 650 note books every year to students from government primary school in Konkana Kurahatti June 14th every year from 2004.
(2) On 26 August 2007, the Trust started a Library for the General populace of Konkana Kurahatti. The library houses around 500 books and subscribes daily newspapers.
(3) In 2006 a successful blood donation camp was organized in order to educate people on blood donation and its advantages in their society.
In June 2008 we started a Pre-primary & Primary School: “Dr Shankar Tenginkai Vidyaniketana”
The School:
The School is named after Late. Dr. Shankar Tenginkai. M.Sc, P.hd, IIT Kharagpur. In his distinguished Career he served as Chairman of Geology Department, Karnataka University Dharwad. He is known and remembered as a noble, honest and sincere academician who embraced hard work and honesty in his professional and personal life. He believed in creativity, innovation and intensive research as Gateway to success and prosperity and preached all his students to share knowledge. Dr. Tenginkai is known for his academic discovery; was the first person in the world to do Open Cast Mining research & discovered that Sulphur/Copper could be found on the surface of the earth.
The Beginning:
The need to start the school was conceived from the fact that there is no quality education system in the area and the ones available are dilapidated state of affairs. Parents have to send their children to the nearby cities to impart quality education and not many parents could afford to send their kids to faraway
places spending exorbitant amount of money on transport and school fees. Hence we thought of the idea of starting a Privately run school to impart quality education at affordable costs for families with lower income. In June 2008, we started a pre-primary school with necessary permission from District Education authorities to cater to the needs of the villagers in and around Konkana Kurahatti village. In October 2008, we applied for necessary permission to start primary school from the academic year 2009-10. Having received the permissions we started 1st grade from June 2009 and now the school management intends to add one class every year for the next 4 years. The school infrastructure facilitates has 07 class rooms; LKG, UKG, 1st till 5th Grade built on 13 guntas of land leased for long term from Mr. Santosh Shobha Sangannavar’s paternal uncles. The school infrastructure also boasts of ample space including toilets and playground.
The Trust has the task of raising funds to construct one class room each year and equip classrooms with appropriate furniture. This is resulting in an annual commitment of funds to the tune of Rs.5,50,000/- every year. Apart from the nominal fees collected is not enough to meet the operation cost of the
school. The expenditure costs include salary for staff, payment towards monthly electricity, water and other day to day miscellaneous expenses. The school has received approval from Deputy Director, Public Instruction, Dharwad and is named “Dr. Shankar Tenginkai Vidyaniketana”.
